The Rising of Japanese Causal Restaurant
To reform the living after war, small Japanese families started to open food stores at their home. Starting from 1950′s, these stores selling wine and beer with snacks developed rapidly and became popular in 70′s and 80′s. As the Japan economy reaching its peak, white collars believed that they had to attend more social intercourse to show their working effort. Therefore, they liked to have business meetings or after-work gathering in those bar-restaurants. Bar-restaurants became extraordinary popular that contributed to the appearance of bar-restaurant chain stores.
When it came to the 90′s, bubble economy had caused many companies to reduce their social expenses. Living under a huge pressure, bar-restaurants became a place for middle-aged white collars to share their gloom and complaints. Ladies and families no longer welcome these restaurants with such a distressing atmosphere. The attractiveness of bar-restaurant gradually decreased.
The founder of Japan Watami Group, MIKI WATANABE took this as an opportunity and created “causal restaurant”. By providing a higher variety of food choice and a young and lively decorated environment, the restaurant is soon being widely accepted by female and family customers. The Watami Group had even registered the name of “casual restaurant” (居食屋) in Japan as the monopoly trademark for the group.
